Turmeric – powerful nutraceutical.
Turmeric seem to have an endless list of health benefits. This common spice that comes from the root of Curcuma longa is widely used in cooking and medicine for thousands of years. It’s key active ingredient is curcumin, which gives turmeric it’s incredibly intensive yellow color and many healing properties. Curcumin is only 3-5% of the composition but it is the best-examined ingredient of the plant. It is one of the strongest antioxidants with a very strong anti-inflammatory, antiviral, anti-bacterial, cleansing and anti-cancer effect.
Apart of curcumin turmeric also contains other strong bioactive ingredients for example in the essential oils turmerones, which not only increase the absorption of curcumin, but together with it they constitute a powerful and unique composition with strong medicinal properties. Turmeric as a whole is even more effective than only one, isolated its component.
Anti-cancer properties of Turmeric
There are many studies confirming the effectiveness of turmeric in fighting cancer. Dr. Bharat Aggarwal, a pioneer in the field of curcumin research, from the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston proved that Turmeric works against cancer in the interior of the cell. Research in mice shows that turmeric can significantly reduce the metastases even on cells that did not respond to chemotherapy. In one of the publications published in Anticancer Research, we can read that the comprehensive research carried out in the last few decades showed that polyphenols contained in the turmeric can both prevent and treat cancer. Contrary to synthetic drugs, Turmeric is 100% natural and does not cause harmful side effects. Clinical tests did not show toxicity on people even at doses over 10 grams / day (prophylactically recommended daily dose of ¼ teaspoon or 6 mm fresh rhizomes).
Anti-inflammatory properties of turmeric.
Turmeric has an extremely strong anti-inflammatory action. Some research show that it is more effective than most popular over the counter drugs like aspirin or ibuprofen and it does not have a long list of side effects.
According to scientists, long term inflammation is the cause of most diseases including heart disease, cancer and many other health conditions that lower the quality of life.
Curcumin in depression
Even 280 million people around the world can suffer from depression. That’s 3,8% of the population! Many studies have shown that due to the way how turmeric affects the neurotransmitters levels in the brain, it can be effective in reducing symptoms of depression.
In a study from 2014, 60 volunteers with severe depressive disorders have been divided into groups, which were given the drug fluxetine (component of known depressed drugs, e.g. Prozac) and curcumin for 6 weeks. The research results showed that curcumin was not only well tolerated, but equally effective as the anti-depressive medicine.
Curcumin protects your heart
Heart diseases are still a killer No. 1 in the world. Studies on both human and animals, have shown that curcumin significantly reduces the aggregation of platelets and so it can protect against the formation of dangerous clots.
Curcumin for prevention and fighting Type 2 diabetes
The research from 2009 showed that curcumin may have a beneficial effect of reducing blood sugar levels. This study showed that curcumin (the active ingredient of the turmeric) is 400 times (!) stronger than metformin - a known medicine for diabetes.
One of the mechanisms, thanks to which Turmeric reduces or retreat symptoms of diabetes is its strong anti-inflammatory effect. Many analyzes indicate that the curcumin contained in the turmeric significantly reduces pro-inflammatory factors - TNF-α and IL-6, which occur with diabetes.
Curcumin for non-specific intestinal inflammation
Non-specific intestinal inflammation (IBD) affects several million people across the world. The most common forms of this disease are Leśniowski-Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.
The exact cause of this diseases is not known, but it is known that the diet and stress has a big impact on it.
A detailed analysis of many studies evaluating the influence of turmeric on ulcerative colitis has led scientists to claim that patients taking curcumin in combination with a drug called Mesalazine experiences much less often relapse and deterioration of disease symptoms in relation to people who did not take curcumin.
Turmeric as an effective pain relief
One of the widely described properties of turmeric is its natural analgesic activity. Due to its strong anti-inflammatory effect turmeric can bring a rapid pain relief. When inflammations are reduced, the pain becomes smaller.
Turmeric effectively relieves pain associated with:
• wounds and accelerates healing
• burns
• operations
• pond inflammation states
• Chronic sciatic nerve injury (CCI)
