Vitamins were discovered just over a hundred years ago, but there is no doubt that they are essential for healthy body and efficient brain.
To this day scientists found and tested thirteen vitamins, which in addition to minerals, fatty acids and amino acids are essential for the proper growth, functioning and overall well-being of the human body, as well as for the prevention and treatment of various diseases. Due to their physical properties, vitamins can be divided in fat soluble:
- Vitamin A found in butternut squash, sweet potatoes, kale, broccoli, beef liver, spinach, butter,
- vitamin D found in fortified Soy, Oats- or almond milk,
- vitamin E found in olive oil, avocados, peanut butter, coconut oil;
- vitamin K found in cabbage, Brussels sprouts or beans and water-soluble
- vitamin C foods reach in this vitamins are citrus fruits, spinach, kiwi but also potatoes! (17 mg per potatoes) and
- B vitamins (B1 - thiamine, B3 (or PP) - niacin, B5 - antithetic acid, B6 - pyrimidine, vitamin B9 - folic acid and B12 - cobalamin.) found in fish, chicken , beef liver, eggs and dairy, nuts and soy.
What's interesting, out of all the above vitamins only 2 can be produced and synthesized by the human body and those are niacin, vitamin D, very often however in insufficient amounts.
Given the above vast majority of nutrients have to be taken with food therefore it is crucial that our diet is well-balanced and nutritious. Unfortunately as diets deteriorate and lifestyles change, most of the world's population is consuming vitamins and minerals below or above the recommended dose triggering different imbalances in the body and mind. Despite the unlimited access to food in highly developed countries modern lifestyleofften leads to global macro nutrients deficiencies. Today’s diet, or so called “western pattern diet” consists largely of processed, prepackaged foods, red meat, candy and sweets, fried foods, high-fat products, refined grains, high-sugar drinks,
Recent research shows that regardless of the diet type we follow (vegan, vegetarian, carnivore or any type of elimination diet) trying to avoid processed foods is important.
At the same time our meals often provide insufficient amounts of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, grass-fed animal products, fish, nuts, and seeds. The diet is deficient in vitamins and minerals and leads to unhealthy and often shorter lives at reduced quality of life at an older age.
There is a proven link between vitamin and mineral deficiencies and various aging-related diseases such as
- heart diseases,
- cancer or
- stroke,
Apart from dangerous health conditions micro nutrient deficiencies can lead to lack of energy, reduction of mental clarity and overall capacity.
Many deficiencies are avoidable through consumption of healthy nutritious foods and good supplementation.
